Over 40 years of passion dedicated to memory
Behind every restored gallery, every maintained combat block, and every organised guided tour at Fort de Fermont are passionate women and men who dedicate their time to preserving an exceptional heritage.
The Association of Friends of the Fermont Fortification and the Maginot Line has been working for several decades to preserve one of the most remarkable fortifications of the Maginot Line. Thanks to the commitment of its volunteers, the Fort de Fermont has now become one of the most visited historical sites dedicated to the Second World War and French fortifications.
Beyond the preservation of the fort, the association's mission is to pass on to current and future generations the history of the soldiers who served in these fortifications and to keep the memory of the Maginot Line alive.
An adventure started in 1975
The association's story began in 1975 when several military history enthusiasts decided to save the Ouvrage de Fermont from abandonment.
At this time, many Maginot Line structures are being abandoned. The installations are gradually deteriorating, and part of this unique heritage risks disappearing forever.
Faced with this situation, a group of volunteers undertook a massive project to restore and preserve the site.
What was initially just an initiative by enthusiasts has gradually become one of the most important French military heritage conservation projects.
Preserving exceptional heritage
Fort Fermont represents much more than just a military structure.
Today it constitutes a unique testimony:
- of the Maginot Line; ;
- of French military history; ;
- from the Second World War; ;
- of the daily life of fortress soldiers; ;
- from 1930s military engineering.
The association offers throughout the year:
- Fort maintenance ;
- the restoration of the facilities ;
- the conservation of historical equipment ;
- the enhancement of the museum's collections; ;
- visitor reception ;
- organising guided tours.
Each intervention preserves the authenticity of the site while ensuring its transmission to future generations.
A museum in constant evolution
Thanks to the work of volunteers, the Fort de Fermont museum has been considerably enriched over the years.
The association has assembled an exceptional collection dedicated to:
- On the Maginot Line. ;
- to the battles of 1940; ;
- to the artillery; ;
- to military equipment; ;
- to the life of soldiers.
Today, the museum boasts one of the most important collections of cannons and military equipment from the Second World War in the region. This heritage wealth attracts visitors from all over France, Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany each year.
Volunteers at the heart of the project
The running of Fort Fermont relies above all on the commitment of its volunteers.
All year round, they take part:
- to the restoration works ;
- for the maintenance of the installations; ;
- to the conservation of collections; ;
- to event organisation; ;
- at the reception area; ;
- to the transmission of historical knowledge.
Their passion allows the site to continue to live and evolve today.
