Fermont, an exceptional site to discover

The Maginot Line

EN Vintage electric train

A journey of more than 2 hours to discover a large artillery work that has remained authentic

with its equipment, its underground organizations and its weaponry.

In front of the entrance, the Outdoor Museum presents a remarkable collection over more than 1000m²

of the main materials of the Maginot Line put in context and the most beautiful collection in France

of French and German fortress and field guns used in 1939/1940.

THE VISIT OF THE FORT

After visiting the ammunition store, an almost century-old electric train will take you 30m underground to the heart of the combat blocks where you will visit a fully equipped artillery casemate, the only organ of this type that can be visited today.

An external circuit will then allow you to discover the upper part of the structure and in particular the 75mm turret of block 1. Back inside the structure, you will successively visit the infirmary, the barracks and the electrical plant in which reconstructed scenes will help you to rediscover the period atmosphere filled with anecdotes.

Fermont is also the evocation of the battles of the Maginot Line and its resistance since, attacked from the front and from the rear, notably on June 21, 1940, the Fort remained undefeated. The Memorial erected in front of the entrance to the Fortress Troops, "surrendered to the enemy without having been defeated" is there to remind us that the Maginot Line still held up to the Armistice.

The 1940 FIGHTER Museum

In addition to the main artillery pieces, you will have the opportunity to discover the interior of five eclipse turrets (including four artillery), a UNIQUE presentation in France. The Museum is also the evocation of field fortification through its most representative equipment. The fortress troops have not been forgotten with the presentation of the crews of works but also that of the infantry and interval artillery troops and their respective equipment.

Finally, it is the evocation of the Phoney War and the battles of the Longwy Advanced Position, with careful reconstructions presenting mannequins in situation, with all their equipment, rare vehicles and artillery pieces. The Fermont Museum is the history of the Maginot Line preserved for the benefit of future generations but it is also an exceptional adventure for children to whom our volunteers pass on this unique history of our cross-border territory.
